The idea to make art and cultural education available to as many people as possible stems from the 1920s. In analogy to book rental in libraries you can rent art in an Artothek. Founded in 1986 Munich Artothek is a municipal institution with focus on the local art scene. Munich artists may use the space for individual presentations as well as group exhibits.

Often the shown pictures can later be seen in the art collection of the Artothek which comprises more than 1500 pictures and sculptures, all ready to be rented. The communicative character of the institute is supported by a diversified exhibition program. Theme exhibits with readings connect visual arts and literature.
