The "Lenbachhaus" was built in the 19. century as a Tuscan villa in the Renaissance-style for the Munich painter Franz von Lenbach. The museum owes its reputation the unique collection of the "Blaue Reiter" with works of Paul Klee or Franz Marc, August Macke, Wassily Kandinski and Gabriele Münter. On top, there are paintings of the 18th and 19th century, of the "Münchner Schule", art nouveau and the "Neue Sachlichkeit".

Since the 1970s the museum has been showing essential tendencies and artists of the international contemporary art scene and collecting current art. The acquisition of Joseph Beuys’ „zeige deine Wunde“ (1974—75) in 1980 marked the beginning of a collection activity concentrating on representative works and groups for the development of modern art, like the following: Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Andy Warhol, Dan Flavin, Richard Serra, Ellsworth Kelly, Jenny Holzer, James Turrell, Jeff Wall, Katharina Sieverding, Christian Boltanski, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Franz Gertsch and Arnulf Rainer.

The affiliated structure hosts exhibitions from the classic modernity (Kandinsky, Picasso, Blauer Reiter etc.) to currently discussed artists (Olafur Eliasson, Franz Ackermann, James Coleman, David Claerbout and others) and thematic exhibtions.
