The "Kunsthalle" of Hypo cultural foundation in Theatinerstraße enrichens Munich's pedestrian area with a place that lures art lovers from all over since 1985 with its diverse program. The past 60 exhibtions were attended by more than 5 million people, "Claude Monet and modernity" alone (November 2001 - March 2002) attracted around 240.000 art fans!

Quality is the crucial aspect for the program of the exhibition, the spectrum reaches from prehistoric times Zeit until now. Here European art from the renaissance to romanticiscm has been able to prove its unbowed attraction. In the area of classic modernity single exhibitions on Gauguin, Picasso, Miró, Magritte, Giacometti or Nolde have been taking place here, just to name a few. Yet, not only the occident with its classic art genres painting and sculpture are presented here, but masterpieces of Carl Fabergé or testimonials of cultures beyond Europe. Thus, ancient kingdoms at the Nile River could be marveled at as well as dynasties of Ancient China.

In the context of large construction measures in the city's heart (5 Höfe-Project) the "Kunsthalle" received a new house mid 2001, which is one third bigger than the old one with its space of 1100 sqm. The building was designed and realised by the renown Swiss architects Herzog and De Meuron, who are well-known as experts for museum construction not only since their masterpiece, the Modern Tate Gallery in London.
