Initially built as a residence and studio of Franz von Stuck (1863-1928) the museum Villa Stuck is the city's third municipal museum since 1992, besides the "Stadtmuseum" and the "Lenbachhaus". The "Villa Stuck" (run by Michael Buhrs) today hosts room for special exhibitions besides the historic space of Franz von Stuck. The collection of his works is complemented by objects of the area of applied arts from the turn of the century, expecially art nouveau. Special exhibtions on themes of the historic and artistic context of Franz von Stuck as well as the area of the visual and applied arts of the 20th century make the museum's program complete.

This villa was built in 1897/1898 and unites with its luxurious room stagings a representative artist's studio and a private residence. It was celebrated as a modern, though idiosyncratic sensation by contemporaries. At the Paris world exhibition in 1900 the furniture that had been designed for the villa was awarded a gold medal. A new and generous studio wing with staff apartments and a newly designed facade finalised the entire complex in 1915.

Only few historical buildings come up with a similar mix of self-dramatization, seduction, lust, beauty and secret like Villa Stuck - it is "alarmingly amazing" according to Stuck-scholar Paul Klee. Its comprenhensive principle is the all-embracing art form, in which life, architecture, art, music, theatre and narcissimus condense in an aesthetic amalgam.
