The "Neue Pinakothek" offers an overview over the epochs of the European art from classicismus to art nouveau. Founded by King Ludwig I. of Bavaria the museum was opened in 1853 for the king's private collection with works of contemporary artists. After the destruction of the original building during World War II and a temporary presentation of selected works at "Haus der Kunst" the new building was opened in 1981 following the plans of the architect Alexander von Branca. Through a steady increase of works through foundations and acquisitions the "Neue Pinakothek" is one of the best museums for the art of the 19th century worldwide.
Outstanding works of European painters and sculptors from the late 18th to the beginning 20th century are the focus of the "Neue Pinakothek". Another focus lies on the German art of the 19th century - this collection, dating back to the private collection of King Ludwig I., is actually one of the largest. Works of Caspar David Friedrich show highlights of the early romantic era. Society painters like Wilhelm von Kaulbach represent the newly awakened interest for German history. The room with works of Hans von Marée, one of the important German artists, is quite unique in comparison to other museums. The collection of French Impressionists as well as the one of portray and landscape painters from England, Spain and France are well equipped.
