The Deutsche Theater is unique in the German theatre landscape. In 1896 opened as a stage for naturalistic theatre the house transformed shortly after into the most glamourous entertainment theatre of the "Residenz". With few interruptions Munich's second biggest theatre proudly concentrates on international musical entertainment with its 1600 seats. The list of stars is long, it reaches from Karl Valentin to David Copperfield, from Josephine Baker to Richard Chamberlain.
Since 1982 the Deutsche Theater belongs to the city of Munich and presents as a host theatre outstanding international show business. Here successful musicals from New York Broadway or the London Westend take place. Often sensational new stagings from all over celebrate their German or European pemiere. Spectacular dance stagings, modern entertainment and breathtaking live music shows complete the diverse program.
During the ball season (January and February) the Deutsche Theater transforms since 1897 regularly into a greatly decorated "Ball house of the city of Munich".
Please note: from June 5 the Deutsche Theater is being renovated for 3 years. From October 14 the theatre is found at its temporary venue in Fröttmaning (subway stop U6).
