From 1900 to 1901 the Prinzregententheater was built following the example of the Bayreuth Richard-Wagner festival house by Max Littmann and on August 21, 1901 it was inaugurated with the „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ by Richard Wagner. Over the years the stage was used in many ways: during the summer for the Richard-Wagner-festival, from 1919 to 1944 also by the Bavarian Staatsschauspiel as common theatre.

A great era of the house began after World War II, when it hosted the Bavarian State opera from 1944 to 1963. The Munich locals' adoration of their "democratic" opera dates back to that time for on all seats sight and acoustics were great. In 1963 the theatre was closed due to disrepair.

With many private donations and mostly through the support of August Everding it was reopened in January 1988. Yet the stage was only a temporary platform. In 1996 the stage area was also renovated and equipped with a nimmersible orchestra. Finally, on November 10, 1996 the solemn reopening took place with "Tristan und Isolde".

Since 1993 the Prinzregententheater is also home to the "Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding".
