Munich's largest theatre has been the city's second venue for a long time. While the Kammerspiele kept scoring with innovative theatre among the younger crowd the Staatsschauspiel was equally celebrated and laughed at for its popular adaptations. The 900 performances of the Bavarian piece "Der Brandner Kaspar oder das ewige Leben" are still record-breaking. This even lured a famous director to Residenztheater: Ingmar Bergman.
Someone who knows both sides and who has essentially marked the Munich theatre landscape is Dieter Dorn. Until 2001 he led the Kammerspiele successfully and then took over at Resi. And the majority of his old group came with him. Among them the important contemporary author of the Bavarian popular play, Franz Xaver Kroetz.
