At the circularly designed Gärtnerplatz, in the centre of Isarvorstadt (1860), located between Viktualienmarkt and Isarauen, you find the Gärtnerplatz-Theater with its distinctive facade. Since 1937 in possession of the free state of Bavaria, Munich's lovely opera house comes up with a diverse schedule; all works are performed in German language.

The Gärtnerplatz theatre was built on private initiative as a pendant to the courtly stage by Franz Michael Reiffenstuel. In 1865 it was opened as "Actien-Volkstheater" and soon King Ludwig's property. It was hardly destroyed during the war. The facade which follows classicistic examples marks the square and the auditorium with its 870 seats is originally restored. Just recently a stage technique was installed. The repertoire focused on operettas until 1955, today operas from Mozart to Strawinsky are part of the program as well as musicals and performances of the in-house ballet ensembles and the series "Jazz im Gärtnerplatz".
