Grünwald - Glamourous District in the South of Munich

Gemeinde Grünwald im Süden von München
Grünwald bei München

"Hey, small guy, your poverty makes me sick. Don't you have a father or a mother who can do?", is the new sound from Grünwald. Real or satire? Who can tell? "Aggro Grünwald" is the name of a group that wants to be distinct – namely through hip-hop from above. Aggro therefore doesn't stand for aggression, but for Aktien ("stock"), Geld ("money"), Grundbesitz ("property"), Rendite ("return") and opulence and thus is the perfect match for the noble heighborhood of Grünwald.

There's glamour everywhere in this sophisticated neighborhood. High gloss Porsche Cayenne and fancy off-road vehicles rolling out of the broad gates to have dinner at Italian delicatessen or swing by the cafeserie. Gracile legs in elegant shoes swinging a bag which would still make it into the plane as hand luggage. Safety first, ecological awareness less so. Yet, you live in Grünwald and there's enough green, except for the attitude. But this is obvious.

Hard to grasp, but true: a 100 years ago Jahre Grünwald still was a dozy village
which only changed with the tram connection to the city. And you should enjoy a ride on the line 25 out of the city into the green.

From gray to green: once you have left behind Giesing, the stops get longer and from Harlaching it's all along the woods. After the city belt you are surrounded by an abundance of green and you will have unique insights into villas and gardens of old tree population. Luxury villas, generous detached houses and high class condominia in great gardens and parks mark the noble neighborhood – a sought-after place for the wealthy and prominent football players as well as anchor men and actors.

When it comes to money, Grünwald gets discrete – no names, not even at the gate entrance. Allegedly the monthly buying power of the average Grünwalder equals the average annual income of a Munich citizen. Is this a problem? They live among their peers and appreciate it. Grünwald is full of traditional families with lots of property. The nouveau riches, so they say, are based around Starnberg.

Exclusive and in an exposed location is the medieval castle which was inhabited by the former musical state director August Everding. The "Feste Grünwald" served as a hunting castle for the Bavarian dukes until it was converted into a ammunition depot and prison in the 18th century. Today it hosts a branch of the archaeological state collection Munich.

Grünwald is also attractive for offices and firms due to its low business tax. The best known, the film city "Geiselgasteig", lies at Munich's city limit at Grünwalder Forst. The latter as well as the Isar shores lure with idyllic hiking and forest trails, e.g. to Wörnbrunn – a nice beergarden in the midst of the woods with sight on browsing fallow deer. In Grünwald it's high potential wherever you look – even the district's outstanding recreational value.
