If you answer the question of where you live by saying "Lehel", you can bank on the following reaction: "What? Near all the offices?" or the more reverential "Oh, you live in Little Paris!" The people posing the questions clearly have no idea and are jealous, because if you live here, you've really landed on your feet. Residing in one of the city's prettiest areas far away from turbulence and tourism - embedded by Isartor, the Isar meadows and Englischer Garten.
Once the neighborhood of laundresses and day laborers Lehel was upvalued by the construction of Maximilianstrasse in the mid-19th century. The lucky ones reside in one of the generous, costly-renovated old building apartments. Sought-after by state clerks not only since the State Chamber has moved nearby. A couple of public and private administration buidings are also based here - like the ministry of economics. While other neighborhoods are rather chic or trendy Lehel keeps being quiet and genuine, but not boring. Just look at the unique selection of boutiques.

Taking a stroll here somehow equals an expedition. Passing fashion stores deliberately offering beyond mainstream you will come across an inspiring conglomeration of lampshades and lusters in Adlzreiterstraße 27. Elaborate goldsmith works are sold by juwellers in Thierschstraße 41. And the ceramists in
Adelgundenstraße 12 are always worth a stop. Once you have merged in Lehel memories of your last trip to France will come up. Here you feel in good hands.
Relaxing becomes easy in the lovely cafés or what is even better: a walk from Mariannenplatz taking a catwalk across the Isar. There you gaze over the gorgeous Art Nouveau building of Müllersches Volksbad or to your left over the Prater Island and the Alpine Museum before getting lost in the wonderful nearby Isar meadows. Impossible to relax any better or faster.
Obviously Lehel also scores in terms of art and culture: Völkerkundemuseum and the Museums' mile at Prinzregentenstraße. Haus der Kunst is known for its outstanding retrospectives while Schack-Gallery shines with its romance works. Find information on the Art bunker at www.kunstbunker-tumulka.de. The Bavarian National Museum is worth a visit not only for its nativity scene figures around Christmas. And for those looking for a thrill after the arts: swing by the Eisbach brook and watch the exciting riversurfing near Haus der Kunst. Now, who could say that Lehel was boring or merely "respectable"?
