Maxvorstadt - Munich's artistic quarter

Some people from Maxvorstadt consider themselves to be Schwabingers. Far from it: Siegestor (Victory Gate) marks the beginning of Schwabing, the streets east and west from Ludwigstrasse are part of Maxvorstadt, hence also LMU University as well as Schelling- and Türkenstrasse. The quarter, conceived by Bavaria's first king Maximilian I. Joseph, offers a high living quality. Modern condominia alternate with old buildings of Wilhelminian style, hip boutiques with original pubs.

Art and culture are the cornerstones of Maxvorstadt: the so-called artistic quarter of Munich is home to an illustrious collection of wonderful galleries such as the three "Pinakotheken" and the Munich "Glyptothek". The Lenbachhaus building, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, the Museum of Religious Art at the Georganium, as well as the Akademie der Bildenden Künste and the College for Music and Theatre are all situated here.

Königsplatz with its monumental buildings and the obelisk forms another centre of Maxvorstadt, often called "the city's brain". For the quarter comprises many educational institutions such as LMU University, the Technical University (TU), the University of applied sciences (FH), the state and university library as well as the state and city archives.

The concentration of jobs and the high number of students (over a 100.000) bring about that there are four times more people in this district during the day than people living there. Maxvorstadt is a typical academic and students' quarter, mainly around the universities and the academy of arts. Much of Schwabing's image is part of Maxvorstadt. The age group between 20 and 30 dominates among the residents. Therefore many bars for the young crowd have settled here.

Pomp Cocktailbar on Georgenstrasse is open until 4am and will be happy to serve night owls one for the road. Backspielhaus offers yummy breakfast on Augustenstrasse, a location we willl come across more often in Munich. Try Spanish tapas at Bar Tapas on Amalienstrasse. Equipped with pen and paper the guests choose from a variety of food which is brought to their tables by the friendly waiters.

Today's residents share the neighborhood with former well-known residents: Georg Elser, Thomas Mann, Franz von Stuck und Franz Josef Strauß, whose father ran a butchery on Schellingstrasse, lived and acted in this place which had been planned on a grid square. The majority are singles due to the many one and two-room apartments and the high fluctuation is a sign of the vicinity of the ecucational institutions.

Thus, there are no reasons to feel inferior to a Schwabinger being a Maxvorstädter. Far from it, considering all the educational and cultural institutions. And from Frederics Serviced Apartments it's a great trip to an interesting neighborhood.
