Northern Munich

Northern Munich – between baroque und modernity

Motorway A9 leads from Nürnberg directly into northern Munich passing the city's new landmark, the football dome Allianz-Arena. On a nice day you will discover older recognition features from a distance: the Olympic Tower on Oberwiesenfeld and the BMW Tower which recently has been completely renovated for millions of Euros.

Neighborhoods like Milbertshofen, Hasenbergl and Feldmoching trigger a sniff with some Munich people, probably since it's not the high society's residence and some people have heard rumours from others about these quarters. Well, at least one prominent fellow citizen grew up in Hasenbergl: Willi Astor, the master of plays on words. And there's more news to Munich's north.

BMW not only produces its series no. 3 there, it is also home to the mentioned headquarters, the museum and BMW World which was inaugurated in October
2007. The futuristic building serves as an oversized showroom and mainly as the delivery centre of new BMW autocars. By the way, Willi Astor started his professional career at BMW, in 1976 he finished his apprenticeship there.

The Borstei is an architectural gem, facing Olympiapark at Dachauer Strasse. From Frederics Serviced Apartments in Gern you should check out the Borstei's backyards with 60 works of art, sculptures and fountains. Having been built between 1924-1929 by Bernhard Borst it has become landmarked meanwhile.

The Olympia-Einkaufszentrum with its subway connection is a shopping paradise not only for locals. Since 1972 hardly any needs remain unmet and cafés and restaurants provide shoppers with refreshments. Also the enormous Euro-Industriepark in Ingolstädter Strasse hosts a variety of shopping like elektronics, consumer shops and furniture stores.

Looking for leisure? The lakes Feldmochinger See, Fasanerie See and Lerchenauer See lure during the summer. No worries though: there's enough space, provided that you belong to the species of the early birds.

In terms of culture Oberschleißheim with its two castles and the adjacent park sticks out. Bavarian rulers once constructed the baroque buildings as a summer residence. Around the corner you will find the rowing regatta course of the 1972 Olympics which is a perfect spot for skaters. For fans of old and new airplanes the external part of Deutschen Museums near the castles is worth seeing. The exhibition is located on historic ground: the airfield and its buildings were constructed for the Royal-Bavarian air force troops from 1912-1919.
