Solln and Pullach - green South

Solln
Solln

The train clatters to Solln rumbling on its iron wheels. Restlessness and everyday life's burdens left behind the dignitaries fade into the cosiness of the mansion colony near the woods while being veiled by cigar fumes.

The Isartalbahn was crucial for the construction of the Solln wooden colony Prinz-Ludwig-Höhe. It was taken into operation in 1892 and went from Höllriegelskreuth via Pullach and Solln to Munich. Isartalbahnhof across from Großmarkthalle was the final stop. There a horse track and a tram operated into the city centre.

The first inhabitants of the mansions were the Munich mayor von Borscht (1907 to 1919) and privy council professor von Linde. The two of them chatted plauderten in the morning at the platform Prinz-Ludwigs-Höhe until the latter traveled southbound to Linde factory in Höllriegelskreuth and the first to the city centre for his official functions.

Today you reach Solln quite fast by S-Bahn or by car. Like back then  Prinz-Ludwig-Höhe is one of the most expensive places with its old tree population, the amazing art nouveau mansions, great houses and small living complexes. The real charm of the mansion suburb are the open-minded people and many tiny shops as well as the cinema and the Solln farmer's market. The latter is meeting point and market place for all kinds of news.

Solln is the southern limit of Munich. The adjoining borough of Pullach is famous for being the headquarters of German secret service BND. Be it the for secret service or the locals: concealing is real big here – just like in Grünwald, the celebs place on the other side of the Isar river. But this doesn't help much in Bavaria, at least when it comes to beer garden culture.

The Waldwirtschaft in Pullach's district Großhesselohe gained political importance for a little while when Bavaria's prime minister called for a demo. Thereason was the some residents' plan to close the beergarden earlier. The now outlawed noise adversaries keep hiding behind their fences, doomed to listen to Jazz sounds without a cool beer. While just hoping that soon the record consumption from 1900 is beaten and that then there's silence as they say here.

Prominently above the Isartal the early gothic Heilig-Geist church is enthroned with its characteristic onion tower. The church square is the real centre of Pullach, embedded in cafés and restaurants. And the environing space is dominated by row houses and detached houses.

Burg Schwaneck is a great destination, designed by the man who created Bavaria statue on Theresienwiese. Sculptor Ludwig von Schwanthaler turned his dream into stone with the burg which today serves as an interculturalmeeting place for young adolescents. Solln has remained a mere residential area where newcomers have a good time adapting and where everybody says hello. In Pullach one can live anonymously, there are more nightlife options and you are a bit closer to the mountains and lakes. Not far from both places you can find the Münchner Golfclub and the lake Hinterbrühler See at the Isarhochufer.
