Three times a year Munich's oldest and most traditional fair takes place, with a history dating back to 1310. Mariahilfplatz at Au is the setting of Auer Dult. t has its origins as "Jakobidult" at Anger, today's Sankt-Jakobs-Platz. From 1791 it took place in Kaufinger- and Neuhauser Strasse before it moved to Au in 1796.
The first Dult of the year is the Maidult and takes place during the first weekend in May. The Jakobidult occurs in July and the Kirchweihdult in end October, one week after country fair of Mariahilf church. Every Dult lasts nine days and you should choose the best time to visit which is on a morning during the week.
For the Auer Dult is a sought after place of meeting up and shopping, and all this with a unique fair feeling. It is said to be the Europe's biggest dish market. Numerous "Standln" (stands) offer porcelain, ceramics and pots. Besides you will find household ware, natural remedies and clothes. Many stands sell antiquarian books and articles of daily use. The assortment includes chamber pots and old rustic furniture.
In former times charlatans, tooth breakers and barber-surgeons offered their healing art while today herb- and tea stands offer cough drops, healthy tea and other mixtures for any gouts. In "Neuheitengasse" (innovation street) carnival barkers compete with the qualities of their products and some visitors return home packed with filled bags and convinced of the deals they made.
Auer Dult unites over 300 traders und showmen being a folk festival apart from a fair. Among the standl area you will find nostalgic fun rides. A small wheel, a chairoplane, a children's carousel, a swing boat and a hippodrome, auto-scooter and shooting gallery. Numerous takeaways and a beer tent with beergarden come up with Bavarian specialties. Compared to Oktoberfest and Münchner Frühlingsfest the Auer Dult is cosy and calm. 300.000 people swing by every year and die most of them during the weekends.
From Frederics Serviced Apartments ist best reached by public transport. Tram 27 has a stop nearby, but also the S-Bahn (local train) with the stop Rosenheimer Platz and the undergound U-Bahn U1 and U2 with the stops Fraunhoferstraße or Kolumbusplatz make it easy to get here. Another vantage of the public transport is found in being able to enjoy some alcohol.
The expression "Dult" traces back to the medieval age and signifies observance. It is a pleasure for young and old. Being a real folk festival with interesting shopping options and yummy food it is a true amusement.
