An unanimous vote of the general meeting of the Deutsche Olympische Sportbund (DOSB) in December 2007 in Hamburg nominated Munich as the official candidate city for the 2018 winter games. The metropolis at the Isar river would host the mega event together with Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Schönau/Königssee. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) chooses the best candidates and will finally decide in 2011.
Minister of domestic affairs Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) granted his full support to the German sports people as well as the city of Munich: “We will do anything possible to be successful with our concept“. Munich had a great chance to get the games. „We should face the challenge: self-confident, decided and together. We should dare united!“, claims the minister of sports.
Since 1972, when the summer games took place in Munich, the world knows that this kind of competition is no hazard – but a success. With the XX. Olympics - the first sports world event in Germany after World War II – the city of Munich had to host the greatest event of its history. The organizers had a hard time how to compose the opening ceremony facing the challenge to create "happy games" in a convincing way.
For ten days the motto of the "happy games" was perfectly realised. The people of the world were peacefully united in the Bavarian capital, the athletes’ performances were amazing. But then the games were adumbrated by the terror act against the Israeli Olympic team.
Let’s hope that by 2018 the middle-east conflict will be history. Munich will be ready to roll if it gets the games – exciting times.
Already in 2005 the idea of an application got conrete shape. But the National Olympic Committee (NOK) at first decided to be candidate for the Olympic summer games. After the general meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on July 4, 2007, when Sotchi was nominated host for 2014, Munich mayor Christian Ude announced, that Munich was ready for the Olympic Winter games 2018.
Munich then commissioned a feasibility study. The latter should show whether all criteria claimed by the IOC could be fulfilled and thus a candidature was internationally competitive. The result: Munich can do, together with Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the skating rink in Schönau am Königssee in Berchtesgadener Land. Even more: The goal to organize climate neutral winter games with „Zero-Emission“ facilities and ecological balancing measures, could set new standards. Regarding sustainibility the host cities would gain profit through the event venues, an improved sinfrastructure and Munich through new apartments.
