A visit at the farmer's market can change your life. A friend who likes shopping
at the Pasinger Viktualienmarkt on Saturdays, got to know her husband there. He stood in front of a range of potatoes with no clue. And since she hates indecision and so she intervened into the conversation of the vendor and her future husband. Today a stroll by one of the 41 Munich weekly and farmer's markets has become a popular ritual.
The Pasinger Viktualienmarkt is one of the four regular Munich food markets. It's situated idyllicly in a pretty courtyard next to the Pasing town hall. A bit smaller is the market at Wiener Platz, a core of Haidhausens. Here mediterranean food lovers will get their money's worth. Try the unbeatable organic bear's garlic pesto from St. Michaelshof from Aichstetten.
Germany a paradise for gourmets? Yes, if you look at the viewing figures of the cooking studios. But where does the star chef buy his ingredients? For sure also at Elisabethmarkt – just a stone's throw away from frederics Apartments at Hohenzollernplatz, which is said to be the secret rival of Viktualienmarkt. For French top products you will be served at Le chalet du fromage. And only Metzger Sageder can cut veal so thin that it gets a saltimbocca. Milchhäusl is a popular place. Initially a milk counter you can enjoy your wheat beer in the morning as well as the first warm sun rays. The snack bar Grenzstein is a realgem. Here intellectuals meet up for a creative lunch break and some homemade specialties.
Today violet potatoe mash is the menu. No problem, for the undisputed address for gourmets is Viktualienmarkt. The corm, blue Swede, is violet and tastes creamy. Strolling between exotic fruits or local apples from Bodensee, mediterranean starters and Franconian sausage delights or fish from the Atlantic Ocean is a real deal also for people with a smaller purse.
A feast for the senses - the small weekly and farmer's markets. Almost every district has its own market day. Here sausage still tastes like sausage and the jam tastes like home-grown fruits. In Berg am Laim (Baumkirchner Straße) there is a market on Friday mornings. Very popular is the grilled chicken. For who's busy that early will seek out the market in Trudering in the afternoon (between Hugo-Weiß- and Felizitasstraße).
At Rosenkavalierplatz (Thursdays) not only Bogenhausen residents use the fresh offers. For the many publishing and bank employees the market is a great culinary distraction.
The Au residents really have a good time in their district. On Wednesdays they can dwell between the many organic vendors at the farmer's market and the rich offer at the weekly market on Saturdays. The weekly and farmer's markets convince with the fresh regional goods. Disadvantage: Don't be late! For who is late will be punished with empty stands.
