From Laber to Ettaler Mandl – a tour through the Ammergau Alps

From Laber to Ettaler Mandl - a tour through Ammergau Alps
From Laber to Ettaler Mandl

In the introspective town of Oberammergau near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, one of the few private-owned mountain railways, the Laber railway, renders its reliable service. This seemingly antiquated and yet up-to date railway has been operating for 50 years now. It transports a maximum number of 11 passengers per ride up to the "Laber" (1.684 m), the landmark mountain of the Oberammergauer.

The "Laber" is certainly not one of the higher tops Bavarian Alps, but one of a great view. You are able to gaze into the foothills of the Alps with its many lakes and on a sunny day you will reach until north of Munich. The Ester mountains with Wank, Fricken und Krottenkopf, the Wetterstein mountains and the Ammergau Alps form the impressive scenery from east Osten via south toward the west. After this eye candy the mountain restaurant will be the place to get fed in order to master the numerous hiking trails. In winter the "Laber" belongs to Bavaria's most demanding ski areas which is particularly appreciated by freeriders.

A real special is the railway's operational stop halfway. Some people's hearts might have sunk into the boots despite the yellow sign on both sides pointing out the necessary stop. After continuing the ride relief can be seen on many faces.

Once you have reached the top you will see the "Ettaler Mandl", a rock sticking out of the dense tree population. Another half-hour and you will find access to the top which is secured with a wire-rope. A feasible tasjk for experienced hikers being free from giddiness. For all others it is recommended to use climbing harnesses and a rope. And for whom it gets too steep after the first part can return without shame. After conquering the top you should get a rest, not only to relax, but to enjoy the amazing panorama.

The descent goes the same trail and the way back to the "Laber" leads via the partly operated Soila-Alm and the Lake Soila. Obviously, the descent with the gondola is a bit easier, but if you are fit you should check out the hiking trail to the parking of the Laber railway.

Oberammergau has become famous for its wood craft and the Passion Plays every 10 years. Ettal has gained a reputation for its monastery and its art of brewing. Two places worth visiting to enjoy the unique flair.

On your way back to frederics serviced Apartments check out the motorway exit Eschenlohe. The restaurant „Zur Brücke“ with its butchery offers fresh regional cuisine. If you like it a bit more solid you will love the so-called battle bowl every Monday night.
