The Twins - the Roßstein and the Buchstein

The Twins - Roßstein and Buchstein
Roß- and Buchstein

The twins, that's what they are called – the Roßstein and the Buchstein. An amazing hike leads up to the Tegernsee cabin which is picturesquely embedded in between two mountain tops. From the parking at the road between Tegernsee and Achensee a way in the woods leads steeply up to Sonnbergalm Hochleger, where a dairy farmer offers fresh milk and cheese.

From there the two tops are in sight already and of course the Tegernsee cabin, being enthroned in a rock like an aerie. Many hikers and climbers call it the nicest cabin of the Mangfall mountains due to its location. And since it is not a secret anymore you will have to share the view with many like-minded fellows on a sunny day.

Behind the Sonnbergalm the options for an ascent to the cabin vary. Hikers not free from giddiness will prefer the Roßstein. The faster and steeper trail leads over rocks and a secured rope route. Once you have reached the cabin you should check out the top of Roßstein (1698 m) before getting a rest. The mountain panorama of the Zillertaler Alps, the Achensee and the Sylvensteinstausee will reward your efforts. The Buchstein (1701 m) is more demanding though, and therefore only recommended for experienced climbers for it's not secured and very steep.

After having mastered 900 meters of altitude difference have a rest at Tegernsee cabin. In 2004 the cabin, being part of the Deutsche Alpenverein (DAV), celebrated its 100th anniversary. Since 1994 it is managed by Michael Ludwig and his wife Silvia. The menu shows simple dishes as well as a variety of beers, soft and hot drinks.

If you get tired or you have scheduled a continuing tour an overnight stay for up to 30 persons is possible. The cabin is operated from the second weekend  in May until the first weekend in November.

The fastest descent goes via the rope route or the detour around Roßstein. Another option is the trail north of the Bruchsteinhütte, north east to Schwarzentenalm and from here through Schwarzenbachtal south east to Achenseestraße (B 307). From the Winterstube a local RVO-Bus brings you to the parking in Bayerwald.

From Frederics Serviced Apartments this great mountain tour to the breath taking Tegernseer Hütte is best reached by car. The motorway A8 with the exit Holzkirchen leads along Tegernsee to Rottach-Egern. From there aus it is only a few kilometers to the parking close to the restaurant Bayerwald. Optionally take the hourly train from Hauptbahnhof to Tegernsee from where there is a bus connection to Achensee.
