[Facts & Directions] [Tegernsee] [Rottach-Egern] [Bad Wiessee]
This title might seem strange to some people since there is no such thing as tranquility around Tegernsee on a sunny weekend. Yet, off the beaten tracks this beautiful lake with its alp-like ambiance remains a worthy destination.
Surrounded by a panorama of mountain pastures and a dense tree population the motives of Tegernsee are on the verge of post card clichés. However, the lake is much more than stereotypes with its boroughs Gmund (north), Tegernsee (east), Rottach-Egern (south) and Bad Wiessee (west) as well as Kreuth further south.
Already in the 19th century Karl Stieler stated: „Enchanting landscape! It looks at us with eyes of eternal youth as if the world hadn't been aging for a thousand years". Not much to add for a description of Tegernsee despite all the changes in the meantime, neither to Ludwig Thoma's sentence "Homeland around me" when he moved into his house on the "Tuften".
We find ourselves in the midst of a landscape which hasn't lost any of its nativeness, as it seems. Yet, I don't want to describe a lake and its ambiance without having a realiy check. For there's always two sides to the coin. One is familiar yet: too many people and therefore lots of traffic on a daily basis and more so on weekends. And despite that there's still space for tranquility beyond the touristic knots.
Choosing the means of transport to get there is easy though. From frederics Serviced Apartments the region around Tegernsee is best reached with the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB). It goes south every hour until late und allows for one or more Mass beer in "Bräustüberl". By car it takes around one hour, depending on traffic.
The lake itself is among the cleanest ones in Bavaria. It measures 6,5 kilometers in length and 1,5 kilometers in width. Its deepest point reaches 74 metres. The Tegernsee-glacier formed the drawn-out lake which leads into the Mangfall river near Gmund in the north. Enjoying a cold beer is possible all around the lake. The same goes for yummy food: be it Bavarian or Asian, simple or haute cuisine, everybody will find the right place here.
A boat trip will show the lake's most wonderful perspectives. On water and surrounded by the hills the small towns blend in beautifully with the landscape forming a unique ambaince.Talking about hills, the Wallberg already has its own article and others will follow.
Nature lovers will be enthused by the golden eagles that can be observed during a guided hike. The tours are free since they are sponsored by a local bank. For who enjoys gambling instead of nature the casino in Bad Wiessee will be perfect. The most modern of its kind in Bavaria was opened in 2005 after 22 months of construction. But please safe a few Euro for your trip back to Munich
