Allgäu – rolling hills and sharp descents

Allgäu – rolling hills and sharp descents

A multitude of different sized winter sports resorts are on offer in the Allgäu, stretching from Schwangau in the east right up to Oberstdorf and Oberstaufen in the west. The western part of the German Alps boasts a varied landscape, characterised by rolling hills and towering mountains. The fact that almost all winter sports are practised here, at practically every level from beginner to pro, further adds to its diversity.

Let’s begin in Oberstaufen, the only place in Germany with a Schroth spa. Forty-eight kilometres of piste are spread over the Steibis, Hochgrat and Hündle-Thalkirchdorf resorts. At the DSV Winter Sports Centre there is a professional cross-country skiing and snow hiking set up. Hikers will discover perfect scenery in Immenstadt, the oldest city in the Allgäu. The re-naturalised Gschwender Horn is the most idyllic spot, and the Mittag-Skicentre and Alpsee-Bergwelt (an Alp-themed adventure park) cater for skiers and snowboarders alike.

North-east of the Grünten Ridge, the most prominent mountain in the Allgäu, winter sports lovers will not only be pleasantly surprised by two breweries, but also by four different cable cars. While the various beers provide one nice surprise, at the moment a single lift pass can be used for two cable cars, too. Ofterschwang, Bolsterlang, Balderschwang, Obermeiselstein and Fischen, all towns in the Horn, promise plenty of ski-related fun. With over 71 km of ready-prepared slopes and a wide variety of options for both skiers and hikers, it’s the best place to be for an active stay.

Easily the best known holiday destination in the Allgäu is Oberstdorf, renowned for its ‘Vierschanzentournee’ (the ‘Four Hills Tournament’) and the ski-jumping hill. Both beginners and experts glide down the slopes of Nebelhorn and Fellhorn, while smaller resorts such as Söllereck/Höllweis, Heuberg/Ifen and Walmendingerhorn provide alternatives. At the summit of the Nebelhorn is a notorious mogul slope and at 7.5 km, is the longest in Germany. The ski resort stretches from Fellhorn down into Kleinwalsertal, which now belongs to Austria.

There are fourteen holiday destinations in the Allgäu and Tirol which all go by the slogan ‘Allgäu – Tirol – Vitales Land’ and combine a trans-border system of 80 lifts and 152 km worth of slope to form a true ski-safari. A magnificent panoramic road runs from Bad Hindelang all the way up to Oberjoch. Over 40% of the slopes are easy and thus ideal for beginners, while the more experienced skiers among us will enjoy the Buckelpiste slope on the Wiedhag lift. The Austrian community of Jungholz, which you can reach via Unterjoch, is completely surrounded by Germany and provides a diverse range of activities for skiers and snowboarders.

Nesselwang has almost one hundred years of skiing history and its 1,575 metre-high peak serves as a central point to the smaller (and thus more easily accessible), cheaper ski resorts. Tegelberg in Schwangau, close to the royal palaces and the Pfronten/Steinach Ski Centre, and Breitenberg-Hochalpe, lie on the Austrian border of the Allgäu. From Munich and Frederics Serviced Apartments, they are best reached via Weilheim and Schongau.
