The Bavarian Mountains –Winter Sports Paradise par excellence

Winter sports in Bavaria
Winter sports in Bavaria

The Bavarian Alps extend from the Allgäu right up to the province of Berchtesgarden. During the winter months they are the perfect setting for winter sports of every kind. However, it is not only the Alps which offer a wide range of possibilities dedicated to the enjoyment of the snow - the lower Bavarian mountain ranges, such as the Bavarian Forest and the Fichtel mountains, are equally recommendable.

It is not essential to know how to ski or snowboard in order to truly enjoy the glorious snow-covered landscape - a winter walk is just as much fun as a romantic horse-drawn sleigh-ride. The more adventurous among us can take control of their very own sled pulled along by huskies.

The thickness of the ice is sufficient to permit ice-skating on many waters and in milder winters, numerous ice-rinks invite you to have a whirl around on skates. The Prinzregenten ice-rink, the speed-skating track at Ostpark, the Olympiazentrum ice-rink and the Eis- und Funsportzentrum West in Pasing are at one's disposal in Munich alone.

As well as cross-country ski runs for skiing and tobogganing fans and pistes for alpine skiers, many resorts also provide exhilarating sleigh runs. One of the more well-known is the Wallberg run in Rottach-Egern (to which a whole article has been dedicated in this edition).

Winter sports in Bavaria are as diverse as the state itself. Discovering the possibilities and getting involved is great fun and you’ll meet plenty more like-minded people doing so!
