... since the towns of Freising and Erding are much closer. Well, they might be right in terms of geography. Yet the land tenure sees the city of Munich with 23%, the free state of Bavaria with 51% and the German state with 26%.
Put into operation in 1992 this major airport was the successor of the time-honored airport in Munich-Riem which not only had become a little old, but also a safety issue with its immediate vicinity to the city.
Ultra-modern and amply-sized the Munich Airport won't fear the comparison with any other international airport.
The Skytrax World Airport Awards serve as the best proof as Munich was awarded top places in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The annual "Worlds Best Airport Award" saw the Munich hub on a great 4th place in 2007 behind Hongkong, Singapur and Seoul.
It took a while to realise the project in Erdinger Moos. Many adversaries boycotted the construction of the major project with various activities. It already had been planned in the 1960s and 70s. Meanwhile the airport has become a vital part for it transports 30 million passengers and around 225.000 metric tons of cargo per year.
Modern architecture in the indoor- and outdoor areas as well as bright and light flooded constructions mark this ample airport. In the central area many shops invite passengers for a stroll. The shopping centre has become a popular place for residents from around the airport as well as people from the city and the Landshut area. It is opened beyond the normal opening hours and its supermarket (with good prices) allows for filling your fridge's lacks on Sundays.
The hill of the visitors' park is not only worth a stop for airplane spotters. Diligently restored planes of old times and a disused rescue helicopter of ADAC have found their home there. The old "Aunt Ju", a Junkers Ju 52 from 1937, a Douglas DC-3 from 1946 as well as a Lockheed L-1049 G Super Constellation of Lufthansa can be visited daily from 9.30 – 17.00 by inserting one euro coins. A miniature golf and a playground together with the Ikarus Restaurant round off the site.
Apropos restaurant – the "Airbräu" in the central area lures not only with low beer prices, half a liter for 2,10 Euro, the Mass (one liter) for 4,20 Euro (just for your interest: the Wiesn-Mass is around 8 Euro) and from September to Juni with live-bands and free entry on Thursdays! The dishes with their Bavarian rustic way are quite low priced. From Frederics Serviced Apartments the airport is reached by local trains S8 or S1. Taking public transport you will enjoy much more some beers at "Airbräu" .
